1. Take a few seconds to relax and sniff the air wherever you are to discover what odors there may be around you.
2. Try this exercise in a restaurant or in your kitchen. Open a few containers of spices such as cinnamon, cumin, or basil and sniff them. Sniff whatever foods you may have in your refrigerator.
3. Sniff the air when you are putting gas in your car.
4. When you identify odors, mentally tell yourself what you are smelling. Say something like, I am exercising my sense of smell and I am currently smelling (name of odor).”
5. You’ll probably be surprised to discover just how many subtle as well as pungent odors you encounter every day.

Last week we talked about how a ninja has to feel his environment more intimately than his foes with all of his senses. You also learned how to exercise your sense of sight. Over the past week you should have been practicing the techniques discussed during that lesson for a few minutes every day. This week you’ll learn how to improve your sense of hearing. Before you can become a ninja you must practice sharpening your senses. Why? Because you have to feel your environment more intimately than your foes with all of your senses. Most of us are born with six senses: The sense of sight; the sense of hearing; touch; smell; taste; and a sixth sense (mind) which could also be called intuition. The sixth sense can be extremely powerful, and yet few people will ever develop or use it. Most of us haven’t developed our other five senses to any great extent either. We’ll deal with improving our first five senses for now because our sixth sense utilizes all of the other five senses from time to time in addition to using its own mental abilities. What follows are some suggestions on how to start right now to become more sensitive to both external and internal stimuli. The things I will suggest in the upcoming weeks will only take a few seconds or minutes and should be practiced until you’re satisfied that “tuning in” to stimuli is an innate part of your behavior. Then you won’t have to practice consciously because you’ll have conditioned yourself to be sensitive at all times.
